What Veterans Should Know About TDIU Benefits

Some veterans have service-connected disabilities that prevent them from holding steady employment, even if their combined rating is below 100 percent. Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability, or TDIU, exists to address that gap.

What Is TDIU?

TDIU allows the VA to pay a veteran at the 100 percent disability rate when their service-connected conditions make it impossible to maintain substantially gainful employment. It recognizes that a veteran’s real-world ability to work matters just as much as the rating percentage on paper.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

There are two main schedular paths to TDIU. A veteran may qualify if they have a single service-connected disability rated at 60 percent or higher, or multiple service-connected disabilities with a combined rating of 70 percent or higher, with at least one condition rated at 40 percent. Veterans who don’t meet these thresholds can still be considered on an extraschedular basis if the evidence supports unemployability.

What Counts As Substantially Gainful Employment?

The VA looks at whether a veteran can earn above the federal poverty threshold through consistent work. Marginal employment, sheltered work environments, and jobs that only exist because of an employer’s accommodation generally don’t count against a TDIU claim. The focus is on whether the veteran’s disabilities realistically prevent competitive employment.

Evidence That Strengthens A TDIU Claim

Strong TDIU claims typically include medical opinions explaining how specific disabilities limit work capacity, employment history showing a pattern of job loss or inability to maintain work, and statements from former employers or coworkers. Vocational expert opinions can also be persuasive.
